Mise en Place's December 2005 tour of the Edina metropolitan area closed with a (head)bang at Station 4 in Downtown St. Paul. And what does the band have to say about the so-called "First Avenue of St. Paul"? Mise en Place says, "First Avenue is the Station 4 of Minneapolis." Station 4 started off hot . . . really hot. The gentlemen of Mise en Place spent the better part of the pre-event evening fighting each other for the attention of the Goddess of the Bar, who showed just the right amount of disinterested disinterest while serving the band slightly cold, canned PBRs to become the band's new girlfriend (apologies to Furman). Opening acts Sounds Like Creed and Creedcore worked their devotees up into a sweaty lather just in time for the cool-air blast of Mise en Place to push nearly everyone out of the showroom and into the bar for the alternative main event, i.e., Mise en Place's girlfriend serving bad drinks on request to the handful of lingering people, who were wondering, "Where are the guitar solos?" and "Who let the preppies on stage?" Meanwhile, Mise en Place were in fact on the stage, hoping that the numerous poles in the venue would get put to good use, savoring the Mudvayne-tailored sound system, and seriously considering playing "Greetings Earthlings" six straight times to fill the set. Although the soundman appeared more interested in the clock than the sound, the band filled the room with something called rock music (no, Station 4, one does not need a Mesa half-stack and a PRS to rock) and efficiently presented their set of wily tunes to those in the vicinity. There was no bloodshed and no fighting, so it could be fairly said that the night ended with a whimper (no offense to guitarist M Forrester's healthy dose of fist-pumping riffage in the coda of "Las Vegas"), not a bang. Next up for you and your can-we-settle-into-a-dysfunctional-holding-pattern-already relationship with your favorite band? The Uptown on January 25th! Special guests to be announced . . .
